Our Commitment to Reconciliation

At St Bernardine's, reconciliation is not just a goal—it is a responsibility embedded in our identity and practice. In alignment with Brisbane Catholic Education's long-standing commitment to reconciliation through education, we believe that genuine reconciliation begins with shared learning, respect, and action.

We recognise that true reconciliation must involve both staff and students. Through education, dialogue, and cultural engagement, we strive to build understanding and honour the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A Whole-School Approach

St Bernardine's is deeply committed to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across the curriculum from Prep to Year 6. Our vision includes:

  • The development of dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander units of work
  • The integration of Indigenous perspectives across all learning areas
  • Ongoing professional learning for staff to support culturally responsive teaching

We proudly acknowledge the important cultural work of Brisbane Catholic Education's Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Ngutana Lui, and encourage meaningful connections to support learning and reconciliation.

The Deadly Diruns Program

An integral part of our reconciliation journey is our Deadly Diruns program—an empowering initiative for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Meeting fortnightly, this group provides a space for students to connect with each other, celebrate culture, and deepen their understanding of their heritage.

The Deadly Diruns have proudly led a number of projects that have enriched our school community and raised the profile of Indigenous culture, including:

  • Restoring the Indigenous fence on Jimbelung
  • Collaborating with an Aboriginal Elder to create a striking serpent mural in Kolbe Place
  • Designing and constructing their own Dirun in the Year 3/4 area
  • Composing and sharing a new Acknowledgement of Country for the school community
  • Planting and nurturing a native garden
  • Hosting and participating in cultural awareness activities

This active and enthusiastic group plays a vital role in strengthening our school's reconciliation efforts and encouraging all students and staff to walk together with respect and pride.
